By its natural values and the indentedness of its coast, recognized as one of the most attractive islands of the Mediterranean. The overall island coast is covered with numerous unspoiled bays and promontories and island archipelago boasts 48 islets in the Croatian Adriatic sea. The island of Korčula is 46,8 km long, its surface covers 276 km square km. It is divided from the mainland, the peninsula of Pelješac, by a channel 1270 m wide and lies by 49 nautical miles north-west of Dubrovnik, 57 nautical miles south-east of Split, 250 nautical miles from Venice and 250 nautical miles from Corfu.

Climate and fun

The refreshing summer wind, “maestral”, soothes excessive heat and offers ideal possibilities for sailing and windsurfing. The mean temperature in January is never lower than 9.8 C, and in July it does not go above 29.9 C. Island enjoys, on average 3,000 hours of sun per annum. One of the greatest advantages of Korčula as a tourist resort is the unspoiled quality and clearness of the sea which surrounds it. The town of Korčula is one of the best preserved medieval towns of the Mediterranean and a traditional tourist and cultural centre of the island of the same name. The numerous buildings and monuments, from the “psephism” of Lumbarda, the oldest inscription in the stone in this part of Europe, to the cathedral, bear witness of the various civilisations which have been interlaced on this island: Greek ,Roman, Illryan, Croatian, Venetian. The legendary traveller, explorer of the Far East, skilful, tradesman and diplomat at the court of Kublai Khan, Marko Polo, was born here in 1254.
