The Village Krapinske Toplice
The area Krapinske Toplice since ancient times is well known as thermal and spa resort. Located in a quiet valley surrounded by wooded hills, in the center of Croatian Zagorje region, only 50 km far from the capitol city Zagreb.
By the old Roman coins founded in this area, Krapinske Toplice springs were known in Roman time as “Aquae Vivae” or living water. The first written record of the springs dates from 1772, as 3 hot springs.
The golden age of the health tourism started in the 2nd half of the 19th century, precisely since 1859, when Jakob Badl bought existing baths and developed three new baths (Jakobova, Marijina and Pucka bath), new hotel, restaurant and spa. Jakob Badl also built the park and planted chestnut alley and thereby created a pleasant promenade from the bath building (Kurhaus) to the restaurant “Bellavue” located on the other side of the alley. This was the way Jakob Badl expressed his gratitude for being healed by sciatica in this healing hypo-thermal water and has been determine further development of Krapina spa, which were popular place at the time for recreation and health care of Austro-Hungarian elite.
In the fifties of the 20th century begins the modern era of the development of health tourism. The hospital department for rheumatic diseases and rehabilitation was founded and grown into Special hospital for medical rehabilitation, one of the most important rehabilitation centar of its kind.
With such reputation, in the 90ies of the last century private investors further contributed and opened: Clinic for Cardiovascular diseases Magdalena, Clinic for haemodialysis Vita and Special hospital for Orthopaedics and Traumatology Akromion.
Thermal water and health tourism
Thermal Springs (4 springs) of natural healing thermo mineral water, with temperature between 39-41 °C and by its content consist in high share of calcium, magnesium and hydrocarbon.
The water is part of the acratothermal waters, bacteriology sterile and not radioactive and could be used in wide treatments. Some treatments are Hydrotherapy as an integral part of the rehabilitation program, weight loss program, active vacation, recreation and various prevention programs.
In addition to physical therapy, water is used for drinking and has beneficial effect to digestive tract.
Held medical programs are based on use of natural healing resources (thermal water and natural mud – Fango) together with modern methods of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Modern tourism and other facilities
Today besides the reputable special hospitals, Krapinske Toplice (Krapina Spa) have 2 outdoor pools open during the summer months and modern complex of indoor pools with a large number of water attraction and saunas available 365 days a year.
The place itself and surroundings offer numerous marked walking and biking routes, on 10-15 min away are located numerous tourist attractions such as: rural households, wineries, castles, museums, horse ranch…
